The Spine

Like in the case of the brain, spine diseases and injuries too can seriously troubling. The spine is a train of 33 vertebrae running along a person’s back, from the skull down to the deep lower back. It’s the pillar on which the human body is supported spine has several important functions. One, it serves as a protective sheath for the spinal cord, which is a column of nerves that allows the brain to control and execute all body movements. Two, the spine enables the body to maintain its upright posture. Three, it serves as a site for the production of blood cells and plasma found in the bone marrow. Those being the functions, spine damage, unless treated or checked, can lead to the body shutting down even immobilizing the patient for life. Today, there are several kinds of treatments used for spine correction, including many that are non-surgical. However, surgery can sometimes become inevitable. Though spine surgery comes with its own share of risks, patients put to it can take heart that high-technology and modern skills leave little room for errors and complications.

More on spine surgery

Spine surgery may be needed in cases where a) the pressure on the nerves has to be eased; b) an unstable spine has to stabilize and c) a crooked spine has to be realigned. These conditions may occur either due to injuries or due malformation of the spinal column at birth or during childhood. Spine surgery is performed by a neurosurgeon with a specialization in the spine, the spinal cord, and the nerves. More about spine diseases and conditions.
