The Best Treatment for Brain Aneurysm

A brain or a cerebral aneurysm is a bulging in the weak area of the artery wall that supplies blood to the brain. When a brain aneurysm is ruptured it results in a subarachnoid hemorrhage. The brain damage or death results from the severity of hemorrhage. Mostly brain aneurysm forms in the blood vessels at the base of the brain called the circle of Willis.

Causes of brain aneurysm:

  • Hardening of arteries (atherosclerosis)

  • High blood pressure

  • Smoking

  • Family history

  • Previous history of brain aneurysm

  • Artery wall infections

  • Usage of drugs like cocaine

  • Head injury

Symptoms of unruptured brain aneurysm:

Most of the brain aneurysms do not indicate any symptoms and they may be found during the other test. In other cases, the unruptured aneurysm will pressurize the brain. During this stage patients may suffer from blurred vision, slurred speech, neck pain, severe headaches and the symptoms may depend on the affected part of the brain and the aneurysm condition.

Symptoms of ruptured brain aneurysm come suddenly. The following symptoms are common in the case of ruptured aneurysm:

  • A sudden sharp and severe headache

  • Pain in the neck

  • Light sensitivity

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Seizures

  • Loss of consciousness

  • Decreased concentration

  • Fatigue

Brain aneurysm diagnosis:

After the physical examination, on the suspect note, the physician might prescribe the patients to go for the following test to know about the aneurysm condition.

  • Computerized Tomography Angiogram Scan (CTA)

  • Computerized Tomography (CT)

  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

  • Cerebral angiogram

  • Lumbar puncture

Brain aneurysm treatment:

Determining the patient’s age, health condition and aneurysm size the treatment will be administered by the neurologist. Generally, if the aneurysm is large surgical procedure is recommended. If it is small, the patient will be advised to control blood pressure, avoid smoking. Both ruptured and unruptured aneurysm condition is treated by surgical clipping (to stop the bleeding) & Endovascular embolization.
